Living Innovations is a leader in a new approach to 24-hour support -- individualized, in-home care. This approach is an alternative to group homes and other residential options where the staff works in shifts to provide supervision and assistance to the residents. Based on an assessment and trial visits, our Community Living Coordinators match individuals with host providers who have a desire to share their homes and lives with others.

This residential model goes by a variety of names including Individualized Service Option (ISO), Host Family, Supportive Roommate, Companion, and Home Provider. The concept is simply to match an individual in need of a home and support with a person, couple or family willing to make a commitment of time and energy.

The individuals we support and their families, many of whom have had prior experience with a conventional group home or staffed apartment, continuously offer testimonials to this approach. The strongest proponents are often those who failed, by virtue of behavioral, social/emotional, or cognitive problems, to adjust to group living.

The Host Provider strategy is successful because the focus is on the individual receiving the support. By providing support in a natural setting, we have found that there is greater quality and consistency of care. Individuals form relationships in ways not always possible with changing shifts. Others receiving care do not negatively affect the needs of the person receiving support.

Our experience is that where the Host Provider concept is new, there is understandable concern and uncertainty on the part of individuals, family members and their advocates.
